Anambra: Meet Tony Nwoye


Former president of the National Association of Nigerian Students and incumbent member of the House of Representatives, Dr. Tony Nwoye, yesterday, emerged as the candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, in the forthcoming governorship election in Anambra State.

Dr. Nwoye, a medical doctor, polled 2,146 votes to beat his nearest challenger, Senator Andy Uba, who scored 931 votes. APC national auditor, Chief George Moghalu got the endorsement of 525 delegates while Barth Nwibe polled 414 votes.

An estimated 5,000 delegates cast their votes in the delegates election, which had been preceded by much intrigues and power play within and outside the state. Nwoye, becomes the latest candidate following the emergence of Governor Willie Obiano as the candidate of the All ProgressiveGrand Alliance, APGA, Chief Osita Chidoka as the candidate of the United Progressive Party, UPP, and Chief Godwin Ezeemo as candidate of the Progressive Peoples Alliance, PPA.

The APC congress commenced on Saturday but sorting of the votes did not start until early, yesterday, after 4,333 delegates voted. The primary election was presided over by the Governor Kashim Shettima-led panel appointed by the APC NWC. Speaking after the conclusion of the election, the Borno State governor said the primary election was about the easiest primary election assignment he had been called upon to do.

“We salute the spirit of sportsmanship exhibited by the contestants and their actions are worthy of emulation. They are true party men and so we expect everyone to be.”

The election was immediately welcomed by Chief Jim Nwobodo, the chairman of the Anambra APC Election Planning and Strategy Committee, who enjoined all aspirants to keep to their promise to support the winner. Kalu lauds apc Meanwhile, former Abia State governor and a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Dr. Uzor Orji Kalu, has commended the party for its internal democracy as demonstrated at the Saturday governorship primary of the APC in Anambra State.

He noted that the APC was poised to wrest power from the All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA-led state government, adding that the APC governorship candidate, Dr. Tony Nwoye, has the capacity to take Anambra State to enviable heights. According to Kalu, who is also the Vice Chairman of the APC seven-man committee for the forthcoming election in Anambra State, all the contestants deserve accolades for the level of maturity and discipline displayed before, during and after the primary election.

In statement by his Special Adviser, Kunle Oyewumi, Kalu said: “The primary election was open, transparent and credible and as such all the contestants are satisfied with the outcome of the primary.  “We salute the spirit of sportsmanship exhibited by the contestants and their actions are worthy of emulation. They are true party men and so we expect everyone to be.”

“The result of the primary is a testament to the fact that the APC remains the only political party that strictly adheres to the tenets of democracy. “It is time for other political parties to emulate the internal democracy mechanism of the APC for the sake of Nigeria’s nascent democracy.

“The APC strongly believes in playing politics by the rules and we shall not deviate from the ideals of democracy . “Judging from the pedigree of the party’s flag bearer, the APC will come out victorious at the November 18, 2017 governorship poll in Anambra State.” Kalu, while calling on the electorate to cast their votes for the APC, urged them to safeguard their votes against rigging, adding that with the APC at the federal level, Ndi Anambra will
benefit more if the state is equally governed by the APC.

The former governor also urged the contenders to wholeheartedly and collectively work with the party’s gubernatorial candidate, Mr Nwoye, adding there is no victor, no vanquished in the primary and as such all hands must be on deck to ensure landslide
victory for the party in the forthcoming election.

Nwobodo in a statement said: “I congratulate Dr. Nwoye for the overwhelming mandate. This is a victory for the APC and all the aspirants for the peaceful manner they conducted themselves at the primary.” “I wish to remind all the aspirants of their commitment to support whoever emerges as the party flag bearer.
