Oyo State | Senator
Mukhail Adetokunbo “Tokunbo” Abiru is a Nigerian banker and Senator representing Lagos East in the 10th National Assembly. Born on March 25, 1964, in Ikorodu, Lagos State, he earned a B.Sc. in Economics from Lagos State University and completed executive programs at Harvard and Lagos Business School. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria and an Honorary Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria.
Abiru had a 32-year banking career, including serving as Executive Director at First Bank and leading the successful turnaround of Polaris Bank. He also served as Lagos State Commissioner for Finance (2011–2013).
Elected to the Senate in 2020 and re-elected in 2023 under the APC, he chairs the Senate Committee on Banking, Insurance, and Financial Institutions. He has sponsored key legislation, including reforms in insurance and copyright laws, and supports economic stabilization policies.
In his constituency, he runs the SAIL Innovation Lab, provides grants through cooperative societies, and has facilitated infrastructure projects including schools and hospitals. He is married with children and is known for his technocratic and results-driven approach.
