Mohammed Umaru Bago (born February 22, 1974) is the Governor of Niger State, sworn in on May 29, 2023, under the All Progressives Congress (APC). Born into a Nupe family with royal ancestry in Minna, he attended Marafa Primary School and Federal Government College, Jos. He holds a Political Science degree from Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto, multiple postgraduate qualifications including MBAs and an M.Sc., and completed executive education at the University of Cambridge, UK.
Bago worked in banking before entering politics in 2007. He served three terms in the House of Representatives (2011–2023), chairing several committees, and contested for Speaker in 2019.
As governor, nicknamed the “Farmer Governor”, he launched the “New Niger Agenda”, focusing on agriculture, infrastructure, health, and security. Key achievements include establishing a task force against insecurity, major road projects, and attracting over $680 million in investments for the Special Agro-Industrial Processing Zone at Minna’s airport. He also promotes family values through religious collaborations.
