Kebbi State | House of representatives
Dr. Yusuf Tanko Sununu is a Nigerian medical doctor and politician, currently serving as the Minister of State for Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction. Born on February 2, 1967, he is from Kebbi State.
He is a trained Obstetrician and Gynaecologist, with an MBBS degree from the University of Ilorin, and became a medical consultant in 2010. Over the years, he has held key leadership positions in the health sector, including National Secretary-General of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Chairman of the NMA in Kebbi State, and board member of the Federal Medical Centre, Katsina, and Usmanu Danfodiyo University Teaching Hospital, Sokoto.
Sununu was elected to the House of Representatives in 2019 and re-elected in 2023 to represent the Yauri/Shanga/Ngaski Federal Constituency. During his first term, he served as Chairman of the House Committee on Healthcare Services and contributed significantly to the drafting of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) Act.
In August 2023, he was appointed Minister of State for Education and was later redeployed as Minister of State for Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, a position he continues to hold. His public service is focused on improving healthcare delivery, reducing maternal mortality, promoting girl-child education, and advancing data-driven strategies for poverty reduction.
